This part was saved with the flat pattern suppressed, the size is: 4,776 KB.  The exact same part saved with the flat pattern resumed, the size is: 1,717 KB. How is this possible?

The file size is affected by the config.pro option save_model_display. The default value is shading_lod. Other values for this option are: wireframe, shading_low, and shading_high. Typically wireframe results in the smallest file sizes.
